The book (Motherless Brooklyn) I assume, used Robert Moses as inspiration for the Moses Randolph character. The rest is history, literally. Moses did clear out whole neighborhoods for his expressway. Unfortunately it was all legal in the sense that a big vision was realized. So this movie introduces miscegenation (shades of incest! and tries to get deep down and dirty. Odd anachronisms abound. It's clearly the late 50s early 60s yet Lionel (Norton) and his confreres (detectives all! sit around passing a joint in the office. That's odd. Deciding to exploit the Tourette's is odd. Lionel is also a savant with an eidetic memory. That makes him plenty weird by late 50s standards. Why the showy Tourette's symptoms? The movie was too long. It was well produced, had plenty of atmosphere, but too often you realize you've been staring at the production values, not getting into a romance or a mystery.

The film itself was beautifully shot; the atmosphere of New York in the 50s of the XIX century was struck to the depths. There is not much humor - it is often based on Lionel's fits and his obscene rhymes, but the story is more serious in tone.
Maybe because of this very seriousness, the film on my rating scale is a little less than 10 - I apologize for the fact that I pay a lot of attention to my emotions that I feel after leaving the cinema.
